Finals weekend, September 2008
-
The Kenilworth Croquet Club Finals took place on 26/27/28 September with all competitors enjoying the Croquet and the sunny weather.
Saturday saw the Association Croquet competitions with three trophies available as Charles Wade had already won the Doug Taylor cup half lawn event. The other half lawn event, The Douglas Trophy was competed for between Alan Richardson and Nigel Haslam. Richardson started well and Haslam responded strongly but a tactical error by Haslam allowed Richardson back in to win by 14-6.
The Secunderabad Cup saw Cliff Daniel take on last year’s winner, John Leader. Daniel used his handicap bisques to good effect and raced to a 23-6 lead but Leader fought back well but had to concede defeat at 26-18.
The afternoon match for the coveted St George’s Cup again involved Leader, this time against Peter Dennis. This was a tight and competitive game but Dennis emerged victorious by 26-12.
The two Golf Croquet competitions took place on the Sunday with Adrian Morris taking on Martin Green for the Pindi Cup in the morning and Peter Dennis for the Kenilworth Cup in the afternoon. Morris was on top form and took both trophies.
Alongside the finals on Sunday, members played a Golf Croquet tournament won by Nigel Haslam undefeated through the day.

Sapcote friendly, September 2008
-
On Friday 12th September, a team of six Kenilworth players gathered to play a golf croquet match against Sapcote, weather permitting. The weather was not permitting. We started in gentle rain which soon became heavy, and after half an hour or so we were all huddled in the pavilion watching a thunderstorm, with large puddles forming on both lawns. It was the third match in succession that Sapcote had had rained off, and we agreed to replay on Wednesday 17th September.
After several dry days the lawns were in good condition; we even had a number of spectators, and on an overcast, mild afternoon we made a good start. However, Ray Clipson was recruited by Sapcote because they arrived one short, and his doubles game was the only one they won in the first round. The second round was won by Sapcote 3-1, with their two singles players both winning against our nos.1 and 2. This left the match poised at 4-4, and the final result was only decided on the completion of the last game. Kenilworth eventually lost 5-7, thanks to Ray Clipson who won his three doubles games for Sapcote!
The Kenilworth team comprised Peter Dennis, John Handy, Philip Wood, Cliff Daniel, David Green and George Willan.
Sapcote were very appreciative of our facilities and looked forward to playing us again.

Ladies Day, September 2008
-
On one of the few perfect September afternoons, a record number of lady members including some entering for the first time competed for the coveted Ladies Trophy at Crackley Lane on Sunday.
The tournament was competed under Golf Croquet rules with some very spirited play and closely contested games.
At the end of the afternoon, Pauline Dennis and Amanda Haslam were on four wins each. The final was another close affair with Amanda the final winner by 7 hoops to 5 and retains the trophy she won last year.

Advanced croquet tournament, September 2008
-
Four of the top players of Kenilworth Croquet Club competed in an advanced Croquet tournament, played in glorious sunshine, for the Castle Cup.
A high degree of skill was shown by all players, with the outcome in dispute until the final game between Henry Fellowes & Paul Swaffield.
In the end, with fading light Henry Fellowes emerged the winner, so retaining the cup that he won in 2007.

Putting the lawns to bed, 2007
-
Blood sweat and tears or was it pure pleasure and rewarding? Unless you were there you will never know.
Sunday was the day lawns 1 and 2 were cut, scarified in 3 directions and cut twice more resulting in 24 bags of grass being removed in the process with Peter and Ray walking some 6 miles each in the process. This was followed by overseeding and then the "pleasure" of spreading and luting 3 tons of top dressing to each lawn by the "volunteers"- ouch my back!
My personal thanks to all those who gave their time and effort in this end of season work which is essential in maintaining and improving the quality of the lawns for the benefit of the Club.

Open Day
(12th May 2007)-
Kenilworth Croquet Club in Crackley Lane held its first Open Day on Saturday, 12 May 2007, and the weather held clear. Twenty guests came along and gave Croquet a try. A good mix of male and female with ages ranging from fifteen to over seventy. Most had not even held a mallet before, but they all enjoyed a game or two.
The second Open Day will be held next Sunday 20th May from 1pm to 5pm. All are welcome. It is free and all equipment is provided but please bring flat soled shoes.

Croquet lawn closure
(8th October 2006)-
Lawn 1 was closed on September 25th.
The following Monday saw the final cutting followed by scarifying in three directions and one more cut.
On Tuesday, very early the dew was cleared and then the over-seeding. At 2pm prompt, "the team" arrived ready to distribute 120 bags of top dressing around the lawn and then to spread lute and brush to an area around 1000 square meters.
On 2nd October, Lawn 2 was treated to the same end of season work. Fortunately the weather was kind and the sun shone to allow the work to be completed. Other work is required during the closed season, in particular leaf clearing during the Autumn fall.
A great effort, well done and thanks to all the helpers who took part.
