(15th February 2010)- Squash success at National Championships
-
Kenilworth Squash Club duo Chris Hall and Sarah-Jane Perry both won their qualifying sections to reach the main draw of the National Squash Championships held at the National Squash Centre, Manchester.
Chris had 3-0 victories over: Jacob Robinson 11-4, 11-5, 11-4; Alex Phillips 11-3, 11-1, 11-4; Andrew Widdison (11-8, 11-8, 11-9). Chris was then beaten by 14th seed Adrian Waller 4-11, 5-11, 1-11 (0-3).
His Kenilworth Club colleague Chris Fuller beat Robert Taylor 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 (3-0), but then unexpectedly lost in the semi-final of qualifying tournament against James Earles 11-7, 3-11, 8-11, 3-11 (1-3).
Sarah-Jane beat Zephanie Curgenven 11-8, 9-11, 11-7, 13-11 (3-1) to set up a qualifying final against Leamington Spa’s Leonie Holt. Leonie had earlier beaten Victoria Bell 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 12-14, 11-6 (3-2). Sarah-Jane’s reward for beating Leonie 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 (3-0) was a main-draw encounter with 2nd seed and the very talented World Number 5 Alison Waters.
Alison proved too strong for Sarah-Jane, winning 11-1, 11-4, 11-3 (3-0), and then beat another Leamington girl, 8th seed Emma Beddoes, 11-4, 11-8, 11-7 (3-0) – Emma reached this quarter-final by edging out Laura Hill 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 (3-2). Alison went on to win the title, defeating the holder Jenny Duncalf in an epic final.

Kenilworth squash relegation fears with comfortable win
(28th January 2010) -
Match: Kenilworth vs. David Lloyd Great Barr
After last week’s resounding 4-1 win at Coventry and North Warwickshire this week saw Guy Salmon Jaguar take on David Lloyd Great Barr.
First up for KSC was Justin Gulston against Andy Murray from David Lloyd Great Barr. Proving it’s not just the name he shares with the tennis supremo, Murray came out of the blocks flying to establish a 4-0 lead in the opener. However, a string of cleverly crafted disguises and deft touches rewarded Justin with ten unanswered points, giving KSC a 1-0 lead. The second game was a much tighter affair with neither player opening up more than a one point lead up to 8-8 before some unforced errors by Justin allowed Andy Murray to level the match at 1-1.
In the next, Murray began to control the T and out manoeuvre Justin early on. Justin responded in kind, storming back to 10-10 to force another tight finish, before running the baton home for a 13-11 win. Advantage Kenilworth. Murray imposed himself in the fourth, generating tremendous power with sharp racket speed to take the game into the decider. By now the momentum was with Murray and he used his experience to take control with some tight squash, forcing Justin to retreat of position. A sterling effort by Kenilworth new boy Justin who fell just short of a great scalp.
Second up for Kenilworth was Keith Watts, in a game of hard hitting on a very hot court. Keith did very well to control the game on a night where the ball was flying off the racket, at a pace much better suited to his younger opponent. However, Keith used his experience and accuracy to dictate terms all the way through the match. Keith battled through some tight exchanges to secure a 12-10, 14-12, 11-8 win. With Kenilworth back on terms, an ominous scent filled the air.
Playing at two for Kenilworth was Guy Pearson. In the standout performance of the day, he really was a sight to behold. Comparable even to Federer, Bolt or Gilchrist at their belligerent best. A different breed of athlete, leaving the opponent looking up at the heavens for an answer. With such artistry in his racket control early, Guy surged into a 7-2 lead, reducing his bewildered opponent to spectator status. A stunning volley drop sealed the game to hand initiative for Kenilworth. The second game was much of the same as Pearson charged through the gears for an emphatic 11-3 win. The third was nothing short of an exhibition, with Guy taking complete control of the court and dazzling the crowd with his finesse and vigour. Team captain Chris Hall hopes Guy will remain unbeaten for rest of the year. After that performance, you wouldn’t want to bet against him.
It was Captain Hall who led by example in the one-string tie. If Guy’s display was a masterclass in the full repertoire of squash strokes , Chris’s was one of supreme efficiency. Think Sachin Tendulkar; taking a capricious art and making it look like a risk free activity. The straight drive, that back hand lob – all executed with consummate ease even when under pressure - to make an organised and skilful opponent look mediocre at best. A consistent good length both on straight and back-court drives with the ball dying in the corners meant that Chris’ opponent was always chasing the ball. A routine 11-6, 11-3, 11-6 win for Chris saw Guy Salmon Jaguar Kenilworth record a fine 3-1 victory, with a nine game winning streak to boot.
The return of players and sublime form has come at the right time for KSC. Any fears of relegation have been emphatically laid to rest. Here’s hoping for an even better outing next week.

Calling all ladies interested in playing team tennis
(4th January 2010) -
Formal match practice for the summer leagues is in March/April. Many ladies are already involved in winter league play but there may be others who have not yet had a game or have not told me that they are interested in match play.
During the winter I would like to arrange some competitive fours to offer everyone who is interested the chance of a game and some informal team practice. Remember that we have four teams in the summer so a range of ability is catered for. The winter could be your chance to have a go at match tennis. For already established players it is a chance to try some new pairings and/or have a game against couples you wouldn’t usually play.
If you are interested please add your name (and contact details) to the notice on the tennis notice board or give me a ring. My home number is 02476 414919. Other contact details are on the notice.

Tennis or skating for Kenilworth Ladies?
(4th January 2010) -
After the Christmas and New Year break, Kenilworth Tennis Club Ladies teams are eager for an end to frozen courts and biting winds, in time for the second half of the Winter season.
Kenilworth have two Ladies Teams playing in the Warwickshire Ladies' Veterans Winter League. The First team has drawn from a pool of eight players and hopes to complete a fourth consecutive win in 2010. At this point, they are second in the League of ten teams, ten points behind Leamington, with three matches yet to play. To date, four matches have been won and two lost. Convincing 8-0 wins were achieved against Hall Green and Warwick Boat Club.
Kenilworth Veterans Ladies Second team aims to encourage all ladies who are keen to participate in team tennis, and give them the opportunity to play matches in a relaxed and fun team environment. They have achieved this in the first half of the Winter league season fielding thirteen different players for six matches. The variety of pairings and players meant there was a different Captain for every game, giving many new players the experience of captaining the team. This team have won one, drawn one, and lost four, but the matches have all been keenly contested and very enjoyable for all concerned.
At the half way point in the Stratford and District League the “A” team, disappointed to be relegated last year, are well placed for promotion back up to the First Division. With 13 points they lie second to Bidford on 17 points. Kenilworth ladies have had to fight hard for their points, with the standard of tennis in the Second Division being very high.
This year the Club have not fielded a “C” team, as so many of the team players are already committed to Veterans matches. The “B” team, captained by Belinda Simmons, is drawn from a pool of the previous “B” and “C” teams and is doing exceptionally well to maintain a middle-of-the-table spot in the Third Division. The mix of relatively younger players and experience has produced excellent results and very enjoyable matches.

Rushcliffe challenge match a success
(22nd November 2009) -
On Saturday 21 November a team of nine from Rushcliffe Squash Club in Nottinghamshire visited Kenilworth 'on tour' to challenge a select team of players from the club. Ian Cochrane, an ex-Rushcliffe player, captained the Kenilworth team which contained a mixture of youth and experience and was chosen as much for the players interest in beer and curry as for their squash prowess. The team was Ian, Joe Faulkner, Dave Gilkes, Matt Cooper, Martyn Kerry, Martyn Holden, Ian Tighe and Jeff Lindsay.
The squash was friendly but competitive with the players very evenly matched. The format was best of three, point-a-rally to 11, with each player playing twice or three times against different opponents. All but two of the matches ended up 2-1, demonstrating the closeness of each game, but Rushcliffe eventually prevailed 26-23 in games.
During the subsequent curry (and beers) a plan was hatched for the rematch over at Rushcliffe in the Spring of next year. Watch this space!
The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and we will no doubt look for other challenges. If you have a contact at another club who you think may be up for a challenge please contact Roger More or Ian Cochrane.

Confidence boosting win puts Kenilworth back on the road to recovery
(16th November 2009) -
Buoyed by the return of Chris Fuller, Kenilworth bounced back strongly after a tough few weeks against an also struggling Solihull Arden team. This was an important game for Guy Salmon Jaguar Kenilworth to get their season back on track after a few injuries had left their depleted squad struggling with only one registered win.
The squad were in a confident mood and the 1st game saw Chris Hall in action against a former junior champion Steve Ayling. Oozing confidence in the warm-up, Chris was able to continue his excellent form and register a comfortable 3-0 win.
The second game saw the return of Chris Fuller into the thick of the action after a frustrating 6 weeks on the sidelines against a very organised Andy Warmington. A slow start from Chris saw him lose the first game 11-6 without playing too badly. However, a smooth shift through the gears saw Chris quickly taking control of the game with some excellent movement and anticipation. A combination of sensible bread and butter squash coupled with some devastating volleys, nice disguises and deft drops saw Chris storm home for a comfortable 3-1 win. There was a bounce back and roar in the stadium on Crackley Lane! A nice way for Chris to blow away any cobwebs, and get the pendulum swinging back into Kenilworth’s favour.
Up next was Guy Pearson who in contrast to Chris Fuller came storming out of the blocks (watch out Usain Bolt!) with some devastating squash. Some accurate drives and a great display of control saw Guy register an 11-1 win taking the best part of 9.6 seconds. However, it didn’t all go GP’s way and some routine squash from his opponent along with a slowing down in pace saw Guy lose the second game. However, Guy was able to regain the momentum in the 3rd and 4th games to bag the game for Kenilworth and take the pressure of Will John and Keith Watts.
After Kenilworth took the bonus points, Solihull came back to win at 4 and 5 string with both Will and Keith putting in solid performances, but not able to win the crucial points at the end of the games.
All in all, a good night for Kenilworth Squash and the boys will hopefully use this foundation to build back into a position of strength.

Weakened squad suffers at the hands of strong Edgbaston outfit
(9th November 2009) -
After bouncing back strongly last week, Kenilworth were missing their numbers 1 and 2 this week and always had their backs against the wall against a solid Edgbaston Priory team.
Martin Green was back for Guy Salmon Jaguar Kenilworth at 3, and he started strongly for Kenilworth, racing into a 10-4 lead. However, as his opponent clawed his way back both players exchanged some tentative squash and Martin was unfortunate to lose the 12-14 with a nick. Tiredness began to creep into Martin’s game and some attacking squash from Priory saw them take the 2nd 11-3. Not to go down without a fight, Martin really dug in with some accurate squash forcing mistakes into his opponents game and finished strongly to keep Kenilworth’s hopes alive with an 11-6 win. However, it was not to be and Priory ran away with it in the 4th to register a 1-3 win for Edgbaston.
Another excellent performance from Kenilworth’s Will John seemed to be getting Kenilworth back into it. Will’s movement and accuracy giving Kenilworth a 1-0 lead in the two string tie. A crucial 50:50 went against Will in the second game which saw him lose the second in a tense 13-11 lock out. The third game saw Will’s opponent closing out the options early with some deft volleying and after a 30+ stroke rally saw Will lose another game 13-11 in a touch exchange of squash. Will battled hard and his accuracy was enough to frustrate his opponent and took the game into a decider with a staggering winner which left the crowd awestruck. The 5th saw another tie break in another tit for tat battle and it just wasn’t going to be Kenilworth’s night as Will lost another in a close 11-9 game. Will did not want to lose that match and was desperately disappointed.
Ian Cochrane and Keith Watts battled hard but lost their games in a frustrating night for Kenilworth and it was left for Guy playing at 1 to restore some pride and avoid a white wash. Another sprinter like start saw Guy take the 1st game with ease, leaving his opponent questioning his own ability! Those drops and boasts were murderous! A change of racquet for Guy in the second saw a change in fortune and the game was locked at 1-1. The third game saw Guy really up his game, and it was show-time as GP hit a through the legs winner to force Kenilworth into a 2-1 lead. A lapse in concentration and some unforced errors from Guy forced the game which Kenilworth should have really closed out into the decider and a tense final game saw Edgbaston leave with a 100% record.
Oh well! A man worthwhile is a man with a smile when (almost) everything goes wrong.
A tough night for Kenilworth Squash Club, who will be looking forward to the return of Chris Hall and Fuller next week.
That said this very much weakened team all played out of their skin, and were very close to stealing an unlikely victory. With the big guns back, and this sort of performance, GSJ Kenilworth have little to worry about.
- Resounding success for Tennis Captains Day
(11th October 2009)- Resounding success for Tennis Captains Day
-
After struggling with a damp and dreary start, Kenilworth Tennis Club’s Captains Day on Sunday 11 October at Crackley Lane finished in glorious sunshine. 32 members enjoyed seven sets of mixed doubles tennis as they sought to win as many games as possible for their respective teams in the given time. Each set lasted precisely 25 minutes with a whistle signalling the beginning and end.
With three timed sets before lunch and four afterwards, there was no time for a rest, so afternoon tea at the end gave a welcome chance for a sit down and social gathering.
Veterans Captain David Fuller’s team scored a resounding victory over Lady Captain Caroline Rhodes’ team with all the individual winners coming from David’s team. Nicola Horobin was the lady runner up with Charlie Griffin sharing the men’s runner’s up prize with Kate Perkins. Kate played the morning part of the tournament as a surrogate man before being replaced by Charlie in the afternoon!
Well deserved overall winners were Andrew Harman and Kay Tomalin. Andrew was in superb form throughout the day with his unreturnable spinning serve, strong ground shots and phenomenal net coverage. Kay too showed her prowess at the net, backed up with steady all court play.

Sarah-Jane wins English Racketlon U21
(7th October 2009) -
Sarah-Jane Perry of Kenilworth Squash Club won the recent English Under 21 Racketlon Championship and narrowly lost the final of the English Open Championship at Redbridge Sports & Leisure Club.
Racketlon matches comprise the 4 sports table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis. Matches are up to 21 points, and the winner is the player with the highest cumulative score.
Sarah-Jane beat Lieselot De Bleeckere of Belgium 69-59 in the final of the under 21 event – 15-21 and 12-21 defeats in table-tennis and badminton were followed by a resounding 21-7 win in squash (unsurprising as Sarah-Jane is the reigning U19 UK and European Champion). Her powerful serving helped her to win the tennis 21-10 and so take the title.
Sarah-Jane had excellent victories 69-61 and 65-46 over Jane Cook and Sarah Lochrie to reach the final of the Open event against UK number 1 and hot favourite Natalie Lawrence. Natalie won the table-tennis and badminton 21-7 and 21-11, but Sarah-Jane dominated the squash in winning 21-3 – Sarah-Jane won the final tennis discipline but just failed to prevent top-seeded Natalie reaching her winning target of 16 points, and so lost 58-61.

(27th September 2009) -
In her first season in the Under 17 field, Chloe Pearson, aged 15, of Kenilworth Tennis, Squash and Croquet Club in Crackley Lane has stormed up the National Squash rankings after a tremendous string of successes during September.
The first weekend, at Birmingham University, she became West Midlands Under 17 Girls Champion.

A great finish to croquet season
(27th September 2009) -
Kenilworth’s croquet season finished on Saturday 26th September with the best Finals Day for many years. A fine sunny day saw a large crowd of spectators fully entertained to some excellent croquet and exciting matches on lawns which were playing very well after the spell of fine weather.
Three of the trophies went to Adrian Morris, who had recently returned from his International debut for Wales against Switzerland.
In his first match in the morning, for the St George’s Cup, Morris and his opponent Henry Fellows both started cautiously. Adrian made the first break and was well ahead. This was countered by a fine shot from Fellows who fought back to make it an even contest but Morris eventually won after a dogged four hour struggle.
While this match was taking place, on the other lawn, John Leader beat Ray Clipson for the Bill Browne Trophy.
In the afternoon Morris was again victorious, beating Peter Dennis for the Secunderabad Cup. Both played aggressive croquet with some fine shots. It ended in Adrian’s favour after Peter had the bad luck to miss a long shot as his ball somehow squeezed through a gap only very slightly wider than his ball and this let Adrian in to finish the match.
The Douglas Trophy for higher handicapped players was a very close affair with Tim Leggatt beating Pauline Dennis by only two hoops.
Morris then made it a hat-trick with the Taylor Cup. This was played to the 14 hoop, half lawn rules against John Leader. Final victory came as the shadows lengthened at the end of an excellent day of croquet and another successful season for this flourishing section of the Crackley Lane Tennis, Squash and Croquet Club.

Youngest player wins racketball trophy
(25th September 2009) -
This annual racketball event took place on Saturday the 12th September with a small but dedicated group of players contesting a handicapped knockout event for the Tony Russell cup . In the plate event Rohit Shah overcame a tired and sweaty Martyn Holden. The defending champion Ian Cochrane had the difficult task of overcoming from a -40 handicap in each game but still narrowly missed out on retaining the cup, being beaten by the youth and generous handicap of Andrew Lindsay.
After the very competitive sport we retired to the bar to quench our thirst and enjoy a infamous home-made chilli & desserts prepared by our star member Gill Pearson (thanks).
Thanks to all the players who supported the event and hopefully we will see them and others enter next year.
A donation of £50 raised through the entry fee will be made to Myton hospice.

Excellent Finals in lovely weather
(20th September 2009) -
Kenilworth Tennis Club completed its Handicap Singles and Open Doubles Tournaments on Saturday 22nd September in glorious weather, with a high standard of play all round.
The Centurions Doubles tournament sees mixed couples with a combined age of 100 or more competing for a trophy presented by the late Hedley and Joan Wood, very popular Life Members of the Club. The final was between Steve Proctor and Caroline Rhodes against Alan Norman and Sarah Sheldrick. The match started with games being traded evenly, until Proctor and Rhodes broke service at 4-3, going on to win 6-3. The second set was dominated by Proctor and Rhodes, but at 5-1 down Norman and Sheldrick saved three match points and gained a few more games before eventually succumbing 6-3, 6-3.
The Mens Doubles was contested between James Roe and James Cooper and Tom Holmes and Charlie Griffin. Youngsters Holmes and Griffin convincingly dominated the first set, with some strong serving and groundstrokes. The second set was turned around by Roe and Cooper, to set up a thrilling final set. The spectators were treated to some fast and skilful net play, with the experience of the older heads eventually showing to win 2-6, 6-2, 8-6.
Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes and Kate Perkins and Melanie Jennings contested the Ladies Doubles. The first set was very close, with some long quality baseline rallying, and Perkins and Jennings were down 2-5, before winning 7-5. The second set showed the dominance and consistency of Perkins and Jennings who won 7-5, 6-1.
The Handicap Singles was between Ashley Duncan and Charlie Griffin. Having performed well to reach his first Club final, Duncan took some time to settle, and Griffin's quality showed, building a good early lead with steady play to win eventually11-3. As so often with young players now, there were plenty of heavy topspin forehands and double-handed backhand returns.
Caroline Rhodes played her third match of a long afternoon in the Mixed Doubles, partnering Tom Holmes against Kate Perkins and James Roe. The first two sets were as close as the scores suggested, with each side having their moments of both good baseline and net play, forcing a final set.
The lights were needed for the last half hour, and after opening up a 4-0 lead, Roe and Perkins could not be caught up. James Roe thus won his second final of the day 7-5, 6-7(7-2), 6-4.
- Castle Cup
(6th September 2009)- Castle Cup
-
The Castle Cup Croquet Tournament for the elite players of the club has just taken place on the Crackley Lane lawns.
The top seed and hot favourite, Roger Tribe, started well with two easy wins and was joined in the final by the second seed, Henry Fellows, who had two much tougher matches. In the rain soaked final, however, a couple of Tribe's long shots just missed their target giving Fellows the opportunity to win the final and take the trophy for the fourth successive year.
The photograph shows the four semi-finalists with Henry Fellows holding the trophy and from left to right Roger Tribe, Bill Sidebottom and Adrian Morris. The ornate Trophy is itself a mystery as it was presented to the club with no history.
It is decorated with Croquet mallets, balls and hoops and was obviously a coveted cup in earlier days.
Bill Sidebottom, the then Croquet Club Chairman, was kindly given the cup some time ago and it may have had an association with a Leamington club where, it is believed, Croquet was played until the 1960s. If anyone recognises it, the Club would welcome any details of its past life.

Junior tennis players "a credit to the Club"
(1st September 2009) -
Junior players from the Kenilworth Tennis Club have just had their "best County Championships ever"according to Head Tennis Coach James Roe.
In a team event taking place over the last 3 months, the Under 8 mixed team became County Champions, having beaten Leamington, Esporta Alcester, Warwick Boat Club and Studley on the way. The team was drawn from Thomas Walton, James Holbrook, Leandro Mennary, James Drew, Jasmin Roe, Amy Gribben, Sarah MacAfee and Catrin Woodcock.
Jamie Gibson was runner-up in the Under 14 Boys, losing 6-2,6-2 to the number 1 seed in a "cracking match", according to James.
Laura Wilkins (number 1 seed) was runner-up in the Under 10 Girls, losing very narrowly in a third set tie break. Milly Webb reached the semi-final in the same event.
Mharie Tyler reached the quarter finals of the Girls Under 9 competition.
James Wilkins won the Boys Under 14 consolation competition, for those losing in the first round. Joseph Porter did the same in the Boys Under 12 consolation, with William Dismor runner-up.
Overall, Kenilworth had a very high number of entrants, all performing well and "a credit to the Club", according to James Roe and his coaching team.

Kenilworth Ladies bow out after a good run
(1st September 2009) -
After a good run in the Over 40s Inter Club National Interclub Championships, Kenilworth Ladies Veterans team finally bowed out on Bank Holiday Monday. Following their excellent win against Leicestershire, they travelled to West Bridgford in Nottingham for a quarter-final match against a very strong team on their indoor courts.
Melanie Jennings showed no signs of jet lag, despite only having returned from America the day before. She teamed up with Nicola Horobin to take an early lead against first couple Isabel Tyrrell and Jane Davies, but the Nottingham couple finally took the rubber 6-3, 6-0.
Struggling with the indoor courts, Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes then managed only two games against and just one more game against the first pairing.
With the match already decided, Jennings and Horobin rallied after losing the first set 0-6, to push Whitehead and Masters in an exciting second set but lost 5-7, giving West Bridgford a deserved 4-0 victory.
Team Captain Caroline Rhodes commented; "We worked hard to get this far, but West Bridgford are an excellent team and we wish them well in the competition".
- Club celebrates European success
(30th August 2009)- Club celebrates European success
-
Sarah-Jane Perry and Chloe Pearson, both from Kenilworth Squash Club, have had great success in European Squash this year. To celebrate their achievements, the Clubhouse now proudly carries a banner (see photo).
Chloe helped England to success in the European Junior Team Championships in Girona Spain. The 14 year old was part of the three person mixed team that took on 18 countries from all over Europe.
The highlight for her was to get the team in to the final with a semi final win over Spain. England won the final 3-0 against the Czech Republic. Sarah- Jane won the European Junior Squash Championships held in Germering near Munich, Germany.
Top-seed Sarah-Jane reached the quarter-finals with 3-0 victories over Nathalie Philpsen of Belgium (11-1, 11-5, 11-8) and Bine Lind from Denmark (11-1, 11-6, 13-11). Melissa Alves from France proved tougher opposition, Sarah-Jane winning 3-1 (11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-3) to join her 3 England team-mates Kimberley Hay, Julianne Courtice and Millie Tomlinson the semi-finals. Sarah-Jane then won the title with 2 further 3-1 victories, beating Julianne (11-3, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7) in the semi-final and Millie (11-5, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7) in the final.
- Good tennis despite the rain
(30th August 2009)- Good tennis despite the rain
-
Kenilworth Tennis and Squash Club held another successful American Tennis Tournament on Sunday 30th August. This is a handicap mixed doubles event, with sets of 7 games each. Each game counts, and players then change courts in accordance with the results. It is always a "fun afternoon" and, despite intermittent rain this time, there were some excellent rallies.
The winners, in both cases by the very narrowest of margins, were Alison Ducker for the ladies and Alan Norman for the men. The tournament was well run by Andy Maguire, who is now playing again himself after a hip resurfacing operation in Rugby Hospital.

Jennings and Perkins hit top form in ladies tennis
(10th August 2009) -
In the penultimate week of the season of the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, Kenilworth First team went to Warwick Tennis Club hoping for a win to keep clear of the relegation zone.
Melanie Jennings and Kate Perkins hit their best form, defeating Lianne Supperstone and Sara Taylor in straight sets. Both Kenilworth couples were victorious against Margaret Simcox and Pat Drummond but Rosie Fuller and Sarah Money lost to Supperstone and Taylor, leaving Kenilworth with three valuable points against a team threatened with relegation.
The Second Team had a disappointing 4-0 home defeat against Stratford. Stratford fielded Natasha Hillyer together with Hazel Mason at first couple. WIth Hillyer several classes above the other players, Kenilworth had little chance. Both Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes and Linda Clements and Carolyn Lindsay took experienced Eileen Robinson and Pauline Donnelly to championship tie breaks, but could not clinch a rubber.
The Fourth team ended a four match winning streak with a defeat at home by Warwick Boat Club fourths, the Division leaders. Captain Chris Coe and Helen Cochrane took one rubber against the second pairing. Anne Holmes and Paddy Deeley fought hard and took the second pairing to a championship tie break, but the final score was 1-3.
Kenilworth remain in contention for a promotion slot, however with all to play for in the last match of the season.

Kenilworth Tennis Ladies have to wait
(10th August 2009) -
In the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, Kenilworth Thirds will have to wait another week for their last match as they attempt to take the Fourth Division title. The Fourth team also have an unfinished match at Caludon Castle.
The Firsts took one point from their home fixture against Beechwood Firsts, with Sarah Money and Kate Perkins defeating Sandra Jepson and Chris Scott in a hard fought two sets.
The Seconds also picked up just one point at David Lloyd as David Lloyd’s three points allowed them to capture the Second Division title as well as promotion. Starting late due to rain, Linda Clements and Kay Tomalin failed to find their rhythm against the second couple and both Kenilworth couples were unable to cope with the hard hitting Hannah Lunn playing with skilful Helen McHugh. Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes salvaged a point against Wendy Supperstone and Jane McTernan with a disjointed but fairly easy straight sets win which started outside and finished on the carpet inside as the light failed!
Both First and Second teams hope to have done enough to keep their respective positions in the First and Second divisions.
- Sport runs in the family
(2nd August 2009)- Sport runs in the family

Carolyn Lindsay and her family are achieving much sporting success.
First, Carolyn was the leading lady in the latest Mixed Doubles American Tennis Tournament, after an entertaining afternoon's play in warm sunshine. The tournament allowed each pair 5 sets of 7 games, and Carolyn's consistent play, based on a very heavy slice, both forehand and backhand, won her many rallies. Not surprisingly, she is also a very accomplished squash player.
Partners changed after each set, and Steve Proctor battled through some tight matches to win the mens' section.
Second, the youngest player there was Carolyn's 15 year old son, Andrew, who has also just succeeded in an unusual sporting field. His school, Alcester Grammar, entered the Inter Schools Rowing Competetion, and came third in the under 15 class in the entire country, winning a bronze medal.
The competition consists of teams "rowing" specific distances on indoor rowing machines of a kind found in many fitness clubs these days. The results are rigorously recorded and fed into a national system. It demands a very high level of fitness.
As one Kenilworth Club member commented- "sport certainly runs in that family".

- Close battles in Tennis finals
(25th July 2009)- Close battles in Tennis finals
-
There were close battles as Kenilworth Tennis Club in Crackley Lane held the Finals of its Open Singles and Handicap Doubles Tournaments.
The Ladies Doubles Handicap was between Alison Ducker/Caroline Rhodes and Belinda Simmons/Patsy Fuller. The first final to start on the day was well fought, with Alison and Caroline deserved winners 6-2, 6-4.
Mike Crisp and teenager Tom Holmes contested the Mens Singles event. Tom took an early break in the first set, but Mike’s experience showed as he fought back. It could easily have gone either way in a close, hard hitting fast paced match, but Mike was the eventual winner at 7-5; 6-4.
The Ladies Singles was between the vastly experienced Melanie Jennings and another teenager, Kate Ivy. New member Kate competed valiantly, but Melanie was, as ever, very strong, controlling the match throughout and winning 6-0, 6-0.
The Mens Handicap Doubles was between Simon Inchley/ Gordon Douglas and Ian/ Richard Simmons. An entertaining match, with father/ son passion and commitment from the Simmons, but the match was eventually won by Simon and Gordon 6-4, 6-3.
Teenagers Kate Ivy and Tom Holmes returned to the courts in a clash of the generations as they played "veterans" Dave Neal/ Caroline Rhodes, in the Mixed doubles handicap event. This three set match was thoroughly entertaining and very well contested, with Dave and Caroline eventually winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.

Rule book decides epic tennis match
(21st July 2009) -
Just as Tom Watson was missing the Open Golf title by the very closest margin, jubilant Kenilworth tennis ladies wre celebrating getting through to the quarter-finals of the national inter-club over 40s tennis championships after the narrowest of victories against Leicester.
After nearly four hours the match at Crackley Lane was drawn at two rubbers, five sets and 48 games apiece.
With the rules stating that in this unlikely event, the winning team would be determined by the match between the first pairs, Kenilworth went through because Kate Perkins and Melanie Jennings had beaten Jane Gadsby and Lucy Fairbrother 6-3, 7-6.
Against the second pair of Alison Ison and Jane Bone, Perkins and Jennings had turned around a 2-6, 0-3 deficit to take the second set and win the deciding set with the loss of only one more game, thanks to some inspired play by Perkins in particular.
Team-mates Caroline Rhodes and Kay Gebbels went down 4-6, 2-6 to the second pair but knowing that every game counted, put up an almighty battle against the firsts. They were edged out 5-7, 6-4, 4-6, but had earned just enough games to square the match and force a check of the rule book.
In another memorable success, Melanie Jennings and her 10-year-old daughter Nicola are through to the semi-finals of the national mother and daughter (under 14) section of the annual Family Championships.
They beat Sue Mitchell and her 14-year-old daughter Jess 6-2, 6-0 in an away fixture at Cambridge, sealing a date at the play-offs in Dudley in November, where last year they were runners-up in the under-10 competition.

Ladies fourths in winning run
(17th July 2009) -
In the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, Kenilworth fourth team stretched their unbeaten run to 4 matches as they took three points playing away against Berkswell thirds. The strong squad has dropped only two points in the last three matches.
Both Kenilworth couples beat the Berkswell second couple in straight sets and "the Helens" (Cochrane and Hunter) valiantly took a championship tie break 13-11 to beat the first couple. Kenilworth were denied maximum points as yet another championship tie break slipped away 5-10 from first couple Chris Coe and Belinda Simmons.
Fourth team captain Chris Coe bravely stepped up to play for the first team earlier in the week, gaining valuable experience with Jacquie Roe from the thirds as the firsts played host to Warwick H & R Club first team. Melanie Jennings and Nicola Horobin took a rubber but the weakened Kenilworth team could realistically not expect any more against opponents now challenging for the first division title.
Playing on the same night the seconds were pleased to take two points at Knowle and Dorridge with championship tie breaks again being shared one each!

Tennis Ladies in good form at Leamington
(13th July 2009) -
In the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, Kenilworth first team were without Rosie Fuller and Nicola Horobin at Leamington against their second team. Kay Gebbels stepped up to play with Melanie Jennings and Kate Perkins partnered Sarah Money to collect a maximum 4 points, consolidating their First Division position.
Kay Gebbels was also in action for the seconds, as they welcomed Warwick H & R seconds sharing a 2-2 draw. Both Kenilworth couples beat the Warwick H & R first pair but lost to second pair Sarah Guest and rapidly improving Charlotte Ray.
The third team were, however, disappointed to take only one point from the top of the table match against Leamington fourths in the Third Division. Patsy Fuller and Carolyn Lindsay beat the first couple and then just lost out in a very competitive championship tie break to the second couple. Gill Cure and Jacquie Roe fought hard but could not quite take a rubber.

Kenilworth Ladies fourths finish in the dark
(7th July 2009) -
In the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, Kenilworth first team took three points from their Rugby visitors as Melanie Jennings and Kate Perkins defeated Anna Ducharne and Sharon Jones 6-2, 7-6. Nicola Horobin and Sarah Money beat the second pairing in straight sets, as did Jennings and Perkins, but found the on form first couple too strong on the night.
Kenilworth third team had the same 3-1 success at Rugby against their thirds, keeping them well up in the promotion race.
On a very hot and humid night at Warwick Boat Club the seconds struggled to find their form, with Linda Clements and Kay Tomalin picking up Kenilworth’s only point with a championship tie break win over Warwick first couple Jackie Sadler and Jo Gibbons.
The fourth team kept up their successful run with a 4-0 win at Nuneaton. Helen Hunter and Belinda Simmons started with a straight sets victory against first couple Olivia Morris and Megan Evans, but needed a championship tie break to beat the second couple. Anne Holmes and Sarah Sheldrick needed two championship tie breaks.
The lights went out on the dot of 10pm in their second match with the score standing at 9-8 to Kenilworth in the championship tie break! Both teams decided to press on in the gloom and Kenilworth took the next and final point.

Kenilworth Mens Tennis in good shape
(5th July 2009) -
In the Mens Tennis League, Kenilworth First team have had impressive wins against Esporta 3-1 and David Lloyd Solihull, also 3-1. With a good 2-2 draw against Hampton in Arden in addition, this has given them a real chance of securing their place in the Premier Division.
An impressive third set championship tie break win by second pair Tom Holmes and Bill Devitt, against the Esporta first pair John Hales and Mark Hughes, was the highlight of the match. Tom had just stepped up from the Second team, and fully justified the promotion. The full team squad also includes James Roe, Richard Sharman and James Cooper.
In a tremendous run of success, the Second team have had three straight 4-0 wins, which puts them on top of Division 3. The team is drawn from Charlie Griffin, Mike Crisp, Martin Wheller and Ian Bullock.
The Thirds have had mixed fortunes, leaving them mid-table in the same Division. The usual team first pair is Nick Aldridge and Andy Harman, second pair Anthony Broad and Stan Barker.
In the Junior section, the Under 14 boys and girls both won their County Divisions, with the Under 14 boys shortly playing a final against Blossomfield, after beating Leamington in the semi- final.
In a further achievement, the Under 8 mixed team also won their Division, beating Esporta, Alcester, and Studley and drawing with Warwick Boat Club.
Mrs Chloe Roe, the junior team captain, said; "These junior successes again demonstrate the value of the enormous encouragement that the whole Club gives to young players. The enthusiasm is tremendous and we have real talent, encouraged by excellent coaching".
- Kenilworth players at Wimbledon!
(28th June 2009)- Kenilworth players at Wimbledon!
-
Tom Holmes and Charlie Griffin from Kenilworth Tennis Club are working on the Play Tennis Zone at Wimbledon from Monday 29th June to Saturday 4th July.
They have been a very successful Junior Doubles pairing and this exciting experience should give them the the opportunity to see the best players in the world at close quarters.
Tennis secretary Anne Holmes says, "Both of the boys are at Henley in Arden College at present, although Charlie is leaving to do tennis coaching full time. Tom will continue with his National Diploma in Sport (Coaching, development and fitness) and then hopes to go on to do a sports degree at University. His aim is to do top class tennis coaching eventually.
This year they were part of the Henley Tennis team that, for the first time ever at the College, went to the national college finals at Bolton, where they finished a creditable third in the entire country."
Mrs Holmes believes it is the first time they have had a tennis team at the College and this led to a "Team of the Year" award recently at Warwickshire College.
"Two weeks ago, they worked at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham and now return to Wimbledon to do as last year - work on the play tennis Zone for a week, entertaining and encouraging youngsters during their day there. It is a skills based activity area which becomes very busy if it rains! It is indeed a huge experience for them and they were delighted to have been asked back."

Kenilworth Third team success continues
(27th June 2009) -
In the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, Kenilworth Ladies third team started the second half of the season with an excellent 3-1 win against visitors Warwick Tennis Club 2. Patsy Fuller and Carolyn Lindsay had another two straight sets victories. Kate Ivy and Belinda Simmons, playing as a pair for the first time, lost their first match to the second couple but then gelled together and had a fine win over first pair Susie Hallard and Sara Taylor 7-6, 6-4.
The second team also had a new pairing. Linda Clements and Carolyn Lindsay took time to settle losing 1-6, 5-7 to the second couple. They came good in their next rubber and squeezed a first set tie break against Berkswell’s first couple Lucie Ray and Sue Walsh. With the Berkswell couple tiring, the Kenilworth pair ran out 7-6, 6-4 winners. Established pair Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes picked up another two points for a 3-1 win with straight sets wins although they needed two tie breaks to beat the first pair.
With many members away watching Wimbledon the fourth team also had a new couple in their home match against C & NW. Sheila Skinner and Melanie Twigger did very well to beat the second couple 6-2, 6-3 but found the firsts just too strong. Captain for the night, Helen Hunter played with Clare Green and took a nail biting championship tie break 10-7 against the first couple before going on to beat the seconds 7-5, 6-4, giving the Kenilworth team another 3-1 win.
A somewhat depleted Kenilworth first team were pleased to pick up one point at Warwick Boat Club against the league leaders. Nicola Horobin and Melanie Jennings played superbly to beat Kate Young and Susie Rowe and came so very close to pushing Jenny Waggott and Arancha Jimenez to a championship tie-break, just losing 5-7, 6-7. Jacquie Roe and Gill Cure playing for Kenilworth found the jump up to the first division hard but Jacquie was proud of her passing shots down the line against Jenny!

Tireless Milly in Marathon effort
(21st June 2009) -
The AEGON mini-tennis competition has just been held, with the top 4 teams in each age group in the County competing.
Kenilworth Tennis Club Under 10 girls came second, a massive achievement as over 30 teams entered and Laura Wilkins unfortunately suffered an injury, so had to pull out on the day. This left Milly Webb having to play as both number 1 and 2.
This meant that Milly had to play 6 matches in 2 hours with no breaks! She managed to win 5 out of 6 matches, beating some of the best girls in the County. Her father said that "no matter how tired she is, she always keeps on going".
Head Tennis Coach James Roe added; "Milly has enormous determination, and we are all really impressed with this outstanding performance".

The Second team were without three of their regular team at Stratford. Patsy Fuller and Caroline Rhodes had a long battle against first couple Pauline Donnelly and Eileen Robinson, just losing out on a championship tie-break.

Playing at Warwick Boat Club against their counterparts the Fourth team were disappointed to lose 1-3. Usually reliable Chris Coe and Belinda Simmons lost both their matches in straight sets.

Not to be outdone, Captain Gill Cure, paired for the first time with Kate Ivy, also won both matches, although taken to a championship tie break by the first couple. In a nail-biting match against the first pair, Kay Darke and Julie Stynes, Fuller and Horobin pulled off a championship tie-break win 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). Rosie Fuller and Sarah Money also lost to Angela Fretwell and Caroline Thompson in two sets.

(17th May 2009)- Kenilworth undefeated in Croquet Festival Trophy
-
Kenilworth took on three Midlands Clubs, Edgbaston, Ashby and Sapcote for the Kenilworth Festival Trophy on 13 May. The top two Golf Croquet players from each Club contested singles in the morning and doubles in the afternoon.
The Kenilworth pair of Club Chairman Adrian Morris and 19 year old Rachel Rowe, a student at Warwick University, were undefeated in the singles and doubles, although Sapcote did take them to an exciting 10-9 match in the afternoon doubles.
There are two forms of Croquet, Association and Golf, which might be approximately compared with the difference in golf itself between medal and match play.
Croquet was also demonstrated on the bowling green at Abbey Fields at the Kenilworth Festival "Party in the Park" on 17 May and, despite the weather, many people tried and enjoyed croquet.
For anyone who missed out, the Crackley Lane Club are holding another Open Day on Sunday afternoon, 24th May. Just come along and see what Croquet is all about. Flat soled shoes are required. All equipment will be provided and refreshments will be available.

On Saturday 17th May, Kenilworth Tennis and Squash Club opened its doors to visitors, as part of its contribution to the Kenilworth Festival.
Mr Geoff Foster of BBC Coventry/ Warwickshire kindly came to conduct live radio interviews with Club President David Burton, the new Under-19 European Girls Squash Champion, Sarah- Jane Perry, her father Alan and Head Squash Coach Steve Townsend.
He was interested to hear how hard Sarah-Jane had to train to reach such an outstanding level. Sarah-Jane modestly said that, in time, 14 year old Chloe Pearson, who has just earned an England national team call up, could do even better. Alan commented that sometimes being a spectator seemed even more demanding than being on court, but it was all very worthwhile.
Steve, undoubtedly one of Britain's most successful Squash coaches, and David between them gave an overall view of the tennis, squash, racquetball and croquet played at this particularly welcoming Club.
David commented afterwards; "We were very pleased to welcome Geoff. We recognised his real interest in sport and hope that he will come back whenever he can find time in his obviously busy schedule. The door is always open for our friends in the media".

Kenilworth and Rugby Ladies share spoils
(12th May 2009) -
Kenilworth Ladies Third Tennis team continued their good start to the season in Division 4 of the Coventry and District Ladies Lawn Tennis League, taking a maximum 4 points at home against Rugby Third team. On her debut for Kenilworth, Kate Ivy did exceptionally well, teaming up with Jacquie Roe to take both rubbers on championship tie-breaks.
First couple Patsy Fuller and Carolyn Lindsay also went to a championship tie-break against the Rugby first couple Pam Bond and Robbin Crichton but had an easier two sets win against the second pairing.
Unfortunately, Kenilworth's First team were unable to match their third team colleagues and went down 0-4 at Rugby against their First team. Again, both couples played championship tie-breaks but neither Rosie Fuller and Sarah Money nor Nicola Horobin and Kate Perkins could clinch the last vital points.
The Second team achieved a 3-1 win at home against Warwick Boat Club Seconds. Linda Clements and Kay Tomalin were in superb form as they battled to take a championship tie-break 16-14 in their first match against Liz Graham and Anna Potts. Thrilled with this result, they then played brilliant tennis to take a tight first set 7-6 against Jackie Sadler and Tracey Wells who faded in the second allowing the Kenilworth pair an easier margin of 6-1.
Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes had failed to find their best form losing 2-6, 6-7 to Sadler and Wells, but moved on to beat Graham and Potts 7-5, 6-4.
The Fourth team collected two points at home against Nuneaton. In spite of the supposedly shortened matches this year, they managed to be on court almost four hours. Chris Coe and Belinda Simmons had a two set victory against the firsts, 6-4, 6-2 but then went on to lose a close championship tie break to the canny second couple. Helen Cochrane and Helen Hunter produced almost identical results in equally long rubbers.

Croquet team pipped by Northampton at start of season
(7th May 2009) -
To start the new season, a Kenilworth Croquet team travelled to Northampton for a Golf Croquet friendly. Golf Croquet is one of two main forms of the sport, the other being Association Croquet.
The teams were tied at five all following the morning's competitive singles. Philip Wood scored two of Kenilworth's wins with one each for Ray Clipson, Tim Leggatt and Pat Wright.
In the afternoon, however, the local side took the advantage to win the doubles by three games to one and hence the match.

Mixed Fortunes for Kenilworth Tennis Ladies as season begins
(2nd May 2009) -
Gill Cure, captain of Kenilworth Tennis Club's Ladies third team was delighted as they picked up Kenilworth’s only win in the opening week of the summer season in the Coventry and District League. Both couples had relatively easy two set wins against Warwick Tennis Club second team’s first couple.
New rules this season produce a championship tie break as the decider at one set all. Gill and Jacquie Roe were the first to try this out in an incredibly close match, just going down 7-10 in the tie-break third set against the second couple (7-5, 2-6, 0-1). Patsy Fuller and Carolyn Lindsay learned from their team mates and won their championship tie-break 10-7 against the seconds (4-6, 6-1, 1-0) giving Kenilworth a good three points.
In the Second division, the Second team were pleased with their 2-2 draw at Berkswell in glorious sunshine. The Fourth team travelled to Coventry and North Warwickshire where they lost 1-3. First couple Chris Coe and Belinda Simmons took a while to settle to the surface, having only just returned from a week on Spanish clay courts. They did collect one point defeating the second couple 7-5, 6-1. University student Clare Green played well with Anne Holmes in her Summer League debut, but the pairing couldn’t match the more experienced opposition.
Missing their captain Melanie Jennings, the First team found Warwick Boat Club First team just too strong. Rosie Fuller and Sarah Money did well to take Helen Lovekin and Arancha Jimenez to a first set tie break, but were then out-hit. Neither Fuller and Money nor Nicola Horobin and Kate Perkins were able to match the skill and experience of Jackie Robinson playing with Roseanne Mann and a 4-0 defeat became inevitable against such accomplished opponents.

(26th April 2009)- Spring Trophy starts Croquet season
-
Twenty players have just competed for the first Kenilworth Croquet Club trophy of the season. The lawns were in excellent condition, allowing some entertaining and competitive Golf Croquet Doubles.
In the final, Tim Leggatt and Ray Clipson narrowly beat Philip Wood and John Fitch by four hoops to two.
Importantly also, representatives from the National Croquet Association have just visited the Club to hold coaching and examinations for Croquet Referees. Two of the members became official Referees - a real compliment for the Club's standards.

Kenilworth Tennis and Squash Club has held its start of season informal American Tournament. This is a handicap mixed doubles event, with partners changing depending on results. It is always a "fun afternoon" and this year was no exception.
The high spot was a presentation to Mike Ducker and Peter Wilson, respectively retiring Chairman and Secretary of the Tennis Section ,of Navy blue club polo shirts bearing the Club logo and their initials. There was also a fantastic cake, decorated by Club member Kate Perkins, with "figures" of both men on as well as tennis balls and rackets. The figure of Mike even sported his customary knee support.
The presentations were made by three of the Club's top juniors; Nicola Jennings, Laura Wilkins and Tom Holmes.
Thanks were given by Anne Holmes, the new Tennis Secretary, on behalf of the tennis section generally, and by James Roe, Head Tennis Coach, specifically on behalf of the coaching team and junior players.
Mike and Peter have been part of the Tennis Committee since 1998 and have held the roles of Chairman and Secretary throughout that time.
Anne Holmes said; "These were voluntary roles that took a lot of their time. Their contribution to the tennis section has been immense and varied - from administration tasks to building and painting the Kids Zone. I am very pleased that, although stepping down from these roles, they will still grace the courts with their own particular styles of play."

Ladies Vets success in National Inter-club Knockout Championship
(18th April 2009) -
On a glorious Spring afternoon Kenilworth Ladies Veterans tennis team travelled to the riverside at Evesham Rowing Club in the first round of the Over 40s event in the National Inter-Club Championships.
They came away with a well earned 4-0 victory. Linda Clements teamed up with Melanie Jennings to take both their rubbers with the loss of only four games. They beat the Evesham first couple 6-2, 6-1 and the seconds 6-1, 6-0.
Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes struggled to settle in the first set but, once in their, stride defeated the second pairing 7-5, 6-0. They had a tougher battle against the firsts but just took the edge in many deuce games and won in straight sets 6-2, 7-5.
Kenilworth now go on to play either Edgbaston Priory or Basford in the second round.
- Double Success
(18th April 2009)- Double Success
-
The Kenilworth Tennis and Squash Club is starting the 2009 tennis season with a resounding double success: the achievement of two coveted Club Mark awards from Sport England.
Both the Squash and Tennis Sections have received ‘top marks’ for the awards from their respective sports bodies; England Squash and Racketball and the Lawn Tennis Association.
These awards are given to Clubs demonstrating consistent best practice and operating standards in their sports. There is a strong focus on the well-being of young players whilst with adults other than their parents, legal guardians and carers.
These standards operate across the whole Club, demonstrating a continued commitment to excellent coaching for children, both at the Club and at local schools.
It is rare for two sections of the same Club to achieve this at all, let alone in the same year. Club President David Burton, who was involved throughout, said; "A lot of work has gone into this and the whole Club membership shares our pride".

- Another close finish to a Woodward Trophy Final
(13th April 2009)- Another close finish to a Woodward Trophy Final
-
There was another close finish in this year's Woodward Trophy final at the Kenilworth Tennis Club. This is an annual mixed doubles handicap competition played during the Winter for a trophy presented by the late Mr and Mrs Fred and Olga Woodward, life members of the Club.
There was a good entry this year of twenty couples, and the weather conditions on finals day were excellent, dry and bright with no wind.
With the handicap against them Mike Ducker and Caroline Rhodes battled hard against Peter Wilson and Nicola Horobin to become the eventual winners. Rallies were long and hard, Peter retrieving shots well, Mike showing his usual consistency and Caroline and Nicola playing some fine examples of testing ground shots and volleys.
Mike and Caroline finally won 6-4, 6-3 after a very determined tight service game by Caroline towards the end of the second set up their victory. Everyone there agreed that this was indeed a fitting result to an all-round entertaining final.

Kenilworth ladies help Warwickshire to Midland Counties over 50s win
(10th April 2009) -
Kay Gebbels and Caroline Rhodes from Kenilworth Tennis Club paired up as part of an eleven strong squad to help Warwickshire to victory in the Midland Counties over 50s Ladies Winter Indoor League. Captain Alana Parsons was absolutely delighted with the team’s first win since the competition’s inception twelve years ago.
Going into the last day of the competition, Warwickshire had lost only one match to Nottinghamshire. Alana Parsons (Solihull Arden) played with Ali Kerr (Four Oaks) and the Kenilworth couple made up the team for the last match beating Cambridgeshire 5-3 in the morning. The championship hung on an afternoon match between Nottinghamshire and Hereford and Worcester. The resulting draw left Warwickshire champions with 6 wins and Nottinghamshire runners up with 5 wins.
Their younger over 40s County team colleagues were unable to repeat their success of last year ending in the runners up position this year. Kenilworth were also represented at over 40s level, with Melanie Jennings a strong member of the team.
The strength of Ladies Veterans tennis at Crackley Lane had been again shown last month with the Kenilworth team’s third consecutive championship win in the Birmingham and District Veterans league.

Sarah-Jane then won the title with 2 further 3-1 victories, beating Julianne (11-3, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7) in the semi-final and Millie (11-5, 5-11, 11-5, 11-7) in the final.

Ladies C team win their Division
(6th April 2009) -
Kenilworth Tennis Ladies “C” team have finished the winter season as champions of Division 5 in the Stratford and District Winter League.
The last match, away against Stratford “D” team, proved a tough battle. Paddy Deeley and Helen Allen fought hard against the first couple , Trighorn and Goddard but went down 6-2, 4-6, 2-6. At the same time captain Sarah Sheldrick and Ann Holmes lost a three setter 6-2, 0-6, 2-6 to Talbot and Nelder. In the reverse matches Deeley and Allen again just failed to clinch another three setter losing 2-6, 6-1, 2-6 but Sheldrick and Holmes won in two sets 7-6, 6-3 to give Kenilworth a much needed point. The point proved crucial enabling Kenilworth to tie on points with Warwicks County Council at the top of the division. Kenilworth took the title by virtue of having won more sets.
Kenilworth “B” finished with a rearranged match against Leamington “C”. Captain Patsy Fuller and Jacquie Roe squeezed through a mammoth three setter against the first couple winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-5. Exhausted by the time they got to the second rubber, they could only take one game off the second couple. Belinda Simmons and Helen Hunter had gone down by the same score to the second couple and lost a spirited fight 6-7, 3-6 to the Leamington firsts.
This was the Kenilworth team’s second match in two days. At the weekend Patsy Fuller had teamed up with Carolyn Lindsay to take both rubbers from Shipston “A” and Belinda Simmons and Helen Hunter had collected another rubber to give Kenilworth a 3-1 victory. Unfortunately this was not enough to save them from relegation but was a spirited end to the winter season.
Kenilworth “A” also ended the season with a loss against Leamington “A”. Nicola Horobin and Sarah Money lost to the established mother-and-daughter pair Sarah and Lucy Butler 4-6, 0-6, and then had a long wait whilst captain Caroline Rhodes and Kay Gebbels battled to take a three set victory against the second couple 6-2,6-7,6-3.
Coming back cold, Horobin and Money took a set to get started and went down in three sets 0-6, 6-2, 2-6. Rhodes and Gebbels had their chances in the first set against the Butlers but lost a tie break. Exhaustion then set in and they lost 6-7, 1-6. The “A” team have 16 points at the end of the season but have to wait to know whether they will survive in the First Division, because of matches still to be played by rival teams.
